| North Carolina A&T football team’s 2015 championship season continues to open big doors for the thriving athletic program. In particular, several team members, as well as head coach Rod Broadway earned some of the highest athletic honors for a historically black college or university (HBCU) football team.
Following a recent announcement by the American Urban Radio Networks, North Carolina A&T running back Tarik Cohen, offensive tackle Brandon Parker and cornerback Tony McRae were named to the highly-coveted 2015 Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) Black College All-American Team. In addition, N.C. A&T head coach Broadway won the SBN Eddie Robinson award for coach of the year, while Cohen earned the SBN Doug Williams award for offensive player of the year.
“This is never about me,” said Broadway. “I haven’t made a tackle since 1977. I’ve never caught a pass; I’ve never thrown a touchdown or ran a long touchdown, so this is not about me. This season was about these young men who made the sacrifice last summer to become champions.”
Broadway led the Aggies to a 10-2 mark overall and a 7-1 finish in the MEAC as the Aggies won their second consecutive co-MEAC title. The team went on to defeat Alcorn State in the inaugural Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. The Aggies are now 4-4 in bowl games and will forever hold the distinction of being the first-ever Celebration Bowl Champions.
The victorious season proved to be full of many firsts, record-breaking stats and prestigious awards. Broadway and Cohen will receive their awards at the Black College Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony on March 19, in Atlanta.
