Faye Tate Williams ’78 received the “Distinguished Alumni Award” from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) on behalf of the North Carolina A&T State University Alumni Association during the 2016 MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia.
The prestigious award is presented annually during the tournament to an alumnus based on contribution and support to the university.
“I am honored to be recognized by the MEAC as a Distinguished Alumnus. I am proud to have my name listed among those selected before me,” said Williams.
From the years of her undergraduate studies at N.C. A&T until now, Williams’ support and enthusiasm for her alma mater has never waned. She consistently exemplifies a “distinguished alumnus” as she can almost certainly be found giving back in profound ways to the university.
A faithful member of the Durham Chapter of the A&T Alumni Association, she is regularly involved in the chapter’s activities and has successfully chaired two A&T fundraising activities.
A dedicated advocate and proponent for the university, Williams was elected to the A&T Board of Trustees in 2009. She currently serves as the board secretary, and has worked tirelessly on several committees including the Academic and Business Affairs Committee (of which she was the chairwoman) and the Executive Committee.
Williams financially partners with the university annually because as she puts it, “I have an obligation and duty to give back to A&T. It is my way of paying forward a small portion of what was done for me.”
She’s also the trustee board representative (and a contributor) to the Aggie Athletic Foundation Board of Directors.
Her eagerness for giving back is just as evident throughout the Durham community. Among several board memberships, she is the sitting chairwoman of the advisory board of the African American Health Improvement Project, which advises a group of researchers at Duke University studying the lifestyle and eating habits of African Americans diagnosed with diabetes. She’s also a Diamond-Life member of the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
For the past 30 years, Williams has worked at the Durham Veterans Administration (VA). She currently serves as the nurse coordinator in the mental health primary care clinic. Her versatility and experience has also enabled her to work as a staff nurse, nurse manager and clinical care nursing coordinator.
For Williams, it’s not as much about how or what she gives, as it is about simply giving. “Giving is my way of not only saying thank you, but I am also helping someone else obtain a most valuable asset – an education,” she said.
