University Celebrates Founders Day and Honors Alumni; Keynoted by International Novelist

N.C. A&T celebrated its annual Founders Day program and convocation, Thursday, March 23, in Harrison Auditorium. While the university commemorated another year of excellence, it also honored and recognized several alumni for their outstanding work and accomplishments, on behalf of their respective colleges.

The following received the Founders Day Alumni Achievement Award:

Anzio Williams ’94 – College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
Donna A. James ’79 – College of Business and Economics
Geoffrey Foster ’90 – College of Science and Technology
Hugene Fields Jr. ’79 – College of Engineering
Janice G. Brewington ’70 – College of Health and Human Sciences
Kenneth R. Jones ’95 – College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences
Melody Chalmers ’98 – College of Education

Among university and local officials that brought greetings, Dr. Judy Rashid ’74, vice chairwoman of the N. C. A&T Alumni Association Board of Directors, reminded the university that just like many of the traditional African naming ceremonies, Founders Day is A&T’s “naming day.” That day, she said, was the day the university was safely “placed under the protection of our ancestors.” “Thank you for being so good to so many for so long,” she added.

Professor Lucinda Roy renown novelist, poet and non-fiction writer delivered the keynote address. Roy is a distinguished professor in creative writing at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She also served as the university’s College of Arts and Sciences’ associate dean for curriculum, outreach, and diversity.

Roy has authored six books, including her new poetry collection, “Fabric,” the novel, “Lady Moses,” and a memoir-critique titled “No Right to Remain Silent: What We’ve Learned from the Tragedy at Virginia Tech.” Her extensive travel and experiences living and working on three continents gives credence to the challenges and cultural diversities her works explore.

Among the numerous awards she has received are the Eighth Mountain Poetry Prize, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s statewide Outstanding Faculty Award and a Discover Great New Writers Award from Barnes and Noble. Roy has been a guest on several television and radio programs and networks including, “The CBS Evening News,” “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “CBS Sunday Morning” and National Public Radio.

Founders Day celebrates N.C. A&T’s 126-year history of exceptional academic achievement, learning, discovery, heritage and community engagement.
