On March 17, the College of Science and Technology at N.C. A&T hosted the second annual Women in Science and Technology Luncheon. Perhaps no other attendee was as excited to be there as alumna Dr. Endya Frye, who returned to the university as the events keynote speaker and as a living example of the many possibilities for women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Frye is currently a pediatric resident at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in the Pediatric Primary Care Program. Her journey began as a biology student at N.C. A&T. From there she attended the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
Over 200 young women from across North Carolina filled the ballroom of the Alumni Foundation Event Center. By telling her story, Frye showed the young women that it is possible for them to be successful and thrive in the world of STEM.
She engaged the students, who ranged from middle school to college students, by simply telling parts of her own story as well as offering helpful tips to navigating the world of STEM and finding their place in an area that has traditionally been male dominated.
Throughout her very interactive speech, Frye encouraged the young women to tell their stories to one another and even compelled some to share their STEM “inspiration.” While some spoke of family members and others noted situations, Frye told them to consider several points as they further their STEM education: recognizing their purpose, finding a mentor and mastering the art of networking.
Admittedly, Frye says, she simply has a passion for service, a drive to provide outreach and faith that propels her even through adversity. She has completed initiatives such as mentoring pre-medical students, organizing pre-medical workshops, advising parents and advisors about medical school application processes and promoting diversity within the medical school community.
The luncheon was part of Science and Technology Week, which featured tours, STEM demonstrations and the annual Extreme IT day.
