Happy 25th Anniversary to Golden Delight

In the 1950’s, majorettes were introduced to the North Carolina A&T State University marching band program. The original name of the squad was “The Untouchables” in the 1980’s and during this time they were known for the “high step” march of the flags and the “A&T Majorette Arch.” Their uniforms were made of the same material as the band uniform but tailored into shorts with jackets and hats with plumes.

In 1992, the name “Golden Delight” was given to the members of the majorette squad. The name was coined by Dr. Kenneth Ruff, the current band director, during a televised battle of the bands. The name, “Golden Delight,” derives from the golden uniforms the ladies wear and combines how the fans should feel after watching them perform - delighted.

In the 1990s, under Ruff’s leadership, the ladies incorporated dance and twirling movements into their show performances. The trademark of the squad soon became its versatile nature. In addition, the group was known to have the largest collection of flags and equipment for HBCU bands.

Golden Delight is now one of the top HBCU dance teams. For three consecutive seasons, the ensemble has won Best “HBCU Dance Team” from HBCU Dance Corp and additional accolades.
