AGGIES IN THE NEWS
N.C. A&T’s Alumni Reunion Weekend Reflection
On May 11, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Alumni Association, Inc. kicked off another successful Alumni Reunion Weekend celebrating class years ending in 3s and 8s.
The Office of Alumni Relations started the weekend off with the induction of the class of 1968 into the Society of Golden Aggies. The office swore in 77 golden aggies who celebrated a major milestone of 50 years of being an alumni. The luncheon was full of style and elegance, and greetings were brought by Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr. and Alumni Association Board Chair, Pamela McCorkle Buncum.
The year of 1968 was very pivotal for North Carolina A&T and the nation. It was the year that A&T’s name and status changed from a college to a university. It was also the year that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. Many of the classmates reflected on those memories as a remembrance poem, written by Cheryl Sloan, that was read aloud at the induction ceremony.
The golden class of 1968 was chaired by Jessie Barnes and co-chaired by Cheryl Sloan with a team of 18 other volunteers who helped with the coordination of the reunion. The class was also presented a congressional proclamation by fellow classmate, Congresswoman Alma Adams, to honor their 50th reunion.
“For years, I have always served as a coordinator for the class of 1968 for our reunions and gatherings at homecoming, and I really wanted our 50th reunion to be a memorable experience,” said Barnes. “My classmates and I operated in love and excellence, and we put together a plan of action to make sure everyone knew the importance of being a part of this reunion and giving back to the university.”
On May 12, the day of the spring commencement for the graduating class of 2018, the golden class and the silver class of 1993 were recognized at the undergraduate ceremony by Chancellor Martin.
The silver class was led by Verdina Walker and Maurice Stewart, with 28 classmates participating in this year's reunion.
“There was such a feeling of pride donning our silver class regalia while celebrating the newest members of the alumni family,” said Walker. “We were so honored to share this experience with the golden class and to thank them for paving the way for us. It was truly a weekend that I will never forget.”
For the remainder of the weekend, alumni in reunion were given an opportunity to visit campus to eat lunch at Williams Dining Hall, shop at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore and participate in a riding and walking tour of Aggieland.
For the closing reunion banquet, each class was honored and recognized for their contributions to N.C. A&T. In addition, deceased class members were memorialized during the event.
