Coach Broadway and Senator Robinson to be honored by the NBCAHOF for N.C. A&T

The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation (NBCAHOF) will host its annual hall of fame induction ceremony on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta during Hall of Fame Weekend. Among this year’s stellar class of honorees for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is Coach Roderick Broadway receiving the Chairman’s Award.

Additionally, Senator Gladys Robinson will be honored at the annual Legacy of Leaders Alumni Luncheon in the category of Distinguished Alumnus.

Each year graduates of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) are inducted into the hall of fame for significant contributions they have made in their respective fields. The NBCAHOF promotes the viability of HBCUs and highlights the accomplishments of their alumni.

Broadway has spread success to various collegiate programs over the past 15years as a head coach. In 2011, he became the 18th head coach in the history of N.C. A&T football, where he spent seven seasons with the Aggies. He completed his career in 2017 by leading A&T to claim two titles in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and two HBCU national championships in 2015 and 2017. He finished with an undefeated and untied season at A&T for the first time in MEAC and HBCU Division I-AA history. Of record, he won a black college football national championship at each head coaching position and six conference championships during his tenure at A&T, North Carolina Central University and Grambling State University.

Under Broadway’s leadership, 33 different players have earned All-MEAC honors at A&T, including 13 players in 2016, the most in school history. In addition, he was the 2017 MEAC Coach of the Year and received two Coach of the Year awards from Pigskin Club of Washington D.C.

He retired from A&T on Jan. 8, 2018.

Senator Gladys Robinson has been a major advocate and contributor to A&T, by representing its interests on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors for nearly a decade. During her tenure with the board (2001-10), she was the primary advocate for all five HBCUs in North Carolina. Through her involvement, salaries of chancellors of HBCUs received parity with their Carnegie peers and attention was drawn to the disparities in programs and faculty salaries when compared to other UNC institutions. With the passing of the $3 billion bonds for UNC institutions, she worked with her colleagues to ensure the funding for the building of facilities on HBCU campuses and implemented a practice of recommending increased minority contractor participation at all 16 campuses.

In addition, Robinson was the primary advocate on the board to maintain nursing programs at A&T and advocated for additional doctoral programs for the university. She has also been instrumental with serving through programs geared towards health, HIV prevention and nursing. She was a founder of the Guilford Community AIDS Partnership, chaired the High Point AIDS Coalition and the first Guilford Coalition on Homelessness Committee.

The induction ceremony is part of the 33rd Annual NBCA Hall of Fame Weekend. Other events include The Competition of Black College Queens, HBCU Invitational Golf Classic, Legacy of Leaders Alumni Awards, Call to Womanhood and Call to Manhood Symposia, Positive Image Program and other programs intended to empower and equip HBCU alumni to better serve their alma maters and their communities.
