Mighty Wins 400 Meters at Duke

The North Carolina A&T track and field teams continued their preparation for the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a trip to Duke University over the weekend.

The Aggies competed in the Duke Invitational where they had one winner and five top-five finishes.

Junior Kemarni Mighty was the sole first-place finisher for the Aggies. Mighty won the men’s 400 meters. He finished the race in 47.24. It was Mighty’s third victory of the outdoor season after helping the Aggies win the 4x400 meter relay at the Aggie Invitational last week at N.C. A&T. He also won the 400m at the Phoenix Invitational two weeks ago at Elon University.

Mighty is one three Aggies to win the men’s 400 this season joining junior Trevor Stewart and Akeem Sirleaf. Mighty is sixth in the conference in the 400 behind Sirleaf (5th) and Stewart (1st).

Sophomore Nazah Reddick had a second-place finish in the women’s high jump. Reddick jumped 5-feet, 6-inches to finish behind Duke’s Cassie Martin. Reddick is second in the conference in the high jump after her 5-foot, 7-inch jump at the Florida Relays.

Freshman Brandon Hicklin had a busy meet at Duke. Hicklin finished third in his most successful event – the men’s long jump. Hicklin jumped 23-feet, 10 ¾-inches. Hicklin is ranked first in the conference at 25-feet, 1 ¾-inches.

Hicklin also competed in the triple jump, the 100m and 200m. He jumped a personal-best 46-feet, 8-inches in the triple jump to finish 14th. Hicklin also ran a personal-best 10.64 in the 100 to finish eighth. He ran the 200 in 21.70 to finish 10th. Also in the men’s long jump, senior Lasheon Strozier finished eighth with his best jump being measured at 23-feet, 1 ¼-inches.

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, junior Robert Miller finished fourth in 14.33. Freshman Cedric McGriff finished 15th (14.76). Miller is third in the conference in the 110 after his performance at the Aggie Invitational (14.17).

N.C. A&T also had a good showing in the women’s 400m. Junior Sun-Sara Williams had a fifth-place finish in 54.72. She finished just ahead of teammate and senior Tori Ray who finished sixth in 54.77. Ray is first in the MEAC in the 400 with a time of 53.96 (Florida Relays), while Williams is third with a time of 54.10 (Aggie Invitational). Williams also finished seventh in the 200.

The Aggies final tune-up for the MEAC outdoor championships will be the Tom Jones Invitational on Saturday, April 27.
