North Carolina Legislators Visit N.C. A&T
Carver Hall, one of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s oldest buildings that opened in 1955, has major plans for renovation.
On August 13, Senate Leader Phil Berger and N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore toured North Carolina A&T’s campus. During the visit, legislators toured Carver Hall’s labs and auditorium. University officials are looking forward to using the budgeted funds to immediately improve the 64-year-old building with modernized features and capabilities. The building needs new heating and air conditioning, wiring and upgrades to labs and bathrooms. Lastly, the building doesn’t comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
Ray Trapp, director of external affairs emphasized, “This will be a game-changer for the university. Thus, allowing us to recruit and maintain students that are looking for excellent facilities to begin and continue their institutional research.”
Essentially, the tour was to see first-hand on how the university plans to spend $18.5 million to overhaul Carver Hall. However, with the deadlock in the N.C. State Capitol, the project for A&T is on hold due to the standstill with the state budget.
An approved budget was initially intended for completion before the current fiscal year that began July 1. However, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper vetoed the legislature’s plan a few days before the deadline, alluding to the presence of corporate tax cuts, inconsequential teacher pay raises, and the absence of Medicaid expansion.
State government and the state university system continue to operate using last year’s spending levels.
