AGGIES IN THE NEWS
N.C. A&T Alumnus and Comedian Becomes Internet Sensation
Timothy Shropshire ’08 is living his dream of being a successful comedian who travels across the country entertaining large crowds. What’s unique about his comedy is that he only does “clean entertainment” and has gone viral several times with more than 56 million views on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
Shropshire, a Fayetteville, North Carolina native, played football all four years he attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. During his sophomore year, he got hurt midway during the season. This experience caused him to spiral out of control, resulting in him losing his athletic scholarship temporarily.
“When I got hurt, I was going through a stage in my life where I didn’t know who I was as a man. My behavior was reckless and I was getting into trouble on campus,” said Shropshire.
“My life turned around when my friend, Brandon Sweeney, re-introduced me to God and we started a Bible study on campus for all of the athletes called, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Turning my life around helped me to regain my focus, secure my scholarship and finish out my college career as a football player.”
After graduation, Shropshire worked as a security officer for a local hospital and then eventually landed a position as a recruiter for North Carolina A&T’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
“I questioned my purpose a lot during this time. I knew I was funny but I wasn’t sure what to do with it. Working in admissions prepared me to perform on stage because the office would send me to different high schools to recruit students,” said Shropshire. “So I used my gift of comedy to help me with my position that soon pushed me into performing before an audience.”
In 2009, Shropshire booked his first show and he hasn’t slowed down yet. He worked as a recruiter for A&T for five years while balancing life as a comedian, husband and father.
“A lot of my shows that I have booked were based on my videos on social media. I’ve gone viral numerous times with 56 million views doing videos about Chick-fil-A sweet tea, getting emotional over my daughter and chicken wings, and the barbershop praise break,” he said. “A lot of my success comes from people sharing my videos and reposting them on their pages; some of my biggest hits have been shared on The Shade Room and Worldstar.”
“I currently have a deal with Chick-fil-A that allows me to use their restaurants for marketing purposes, all because my content exploded on social media.”
Shropshire and his family reside in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his wife Esther, is a labor and delivery-room nurse. They have two daughters and a son.
“I am now a full-time comedian and entertainer and I am blessed to have my family on the road with me to travel across the country and still have time to homeschool my children,” he said.
“For all the Aggies going through quarantine, my advice is to cherish the people you love even if you can’t see them face-to-face during this time and remember to keep your Aggie Pride strong for yourself and others.”
