Information session

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will host its next Aggie Information Session on Jan. 28, 7–9 p.m., in the Alumni-Foundation Event Center on campus. The informal gathering is designed for prospective students and parents to receive answers to their questions about the application process, academic majors, financial assistance, academic scholarships, student life and other relevant topics. Save the dates

Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. has scheduled two forums this spring: Wednesday, Feb. 12, for administrators and faculty, and Wednesday, April 2, for staff. Both forums will convene 3–5 p.m. in the auditorium of the Academic Classroom Building, room 101.

Sales tax reminder

Admission charges to all entertainment events are subject to state and local sales tax, in accordance with new state tax legislation that went into effect Jan. 1. Tickets purchased through the University Ticket Office for events such as games, theater shows, etcetera, will be taxed. For additional information regarding the new legislation, visit the website for the North Carolina Department of Revenue at www.dornc.com.  

Tech Thursdays

The School of Technology invites you to participate in its biweekly Tech Thursday Information Sessions. These informal sessions allow you to engage one-on-one with faculty, staff and students while you decide which of the “degrees with earning power” is best for you.

 

The session dates for the spring 2014 semester are Jan. 30, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, March 13, March 27, April 10, April 24 and May 8. All sessions are in Smith Hall, room 2014, 4–6 p.m.

Life sciences workshop

Life sciences research faculty, staff, post docs and Ph.D. students are invited to attend “Data in the Life Sciences - Managing, Protecting, and Complying” on Thursday, March 6, at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering. This half-day workshop will be provided by a team from Indiana University. Mark your calendars now. Additional information is forthcoming.

Dr. Solomon Bililign

Dr. Solomon Bililign, professor of physics and director of the NOAA-ISET Center at N.C. A&T, organized and chaired a session, “The Role of Physics in Geosciences: Earth and Atmospheric Physics and Climate Physics,” at the 80th annual meeting of the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society in Bowling Green, Ky., Nov. 20–23. Broadly speaking, geosciences include atmospheric sciences (climate, weather, atmospheric chemistry and physics, meteorology), biogeosciences, global environmental change, hydrology, ocean sciences, natural hazard, planetary sciences, solar, physics, mineral and rock physics, seismology, tectonics, geochemistry and petrology. The session showed the central role physics plays in some of these areas and how physics departments can enhance enrollment by increasing applied areas in geosciences.

Dr. Goldie Byrd

Dr. Goldie Byrd, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has received the Women of Vision Award of Excellence in the category of Leadership in Higher Education Administration, Science and Research, from the Durham Alumnae Chapter of the Bennett College National Alumnae Association. The award is given to those whose dreams, vision and legacy nationally impact many and serve as a model for women and others around the world.

 

The chapter cited Byrd for excellence in teaching, leadership and research at the universities where she has served. She is a past recipient of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring from President Barack Obama, and the Triad Business Journal Women in Business Award. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Association has recognized Byrd for her research in the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease in African Americans.

Dr. Manuel R. Reyes

Dr. Manuel R. Reyes, professor of biological engineering, along with Ken C. Tangcalagan, Ma Elen Chiong-Javier, recently gave two presentations at De La Salle University in the Philippines: “Role of Vegetables and Fruits in Nutrition Security: Recommendations for Conservation Agriculture Production Systems” and “Gendered Benefits and Challenges of Conservation Agriculture; Implications for Smallholder Adoption in Developing Countries.”
