Corey Branch ’00

From Mailroom to Council Chambers in Raleigh City Government

Corey Branch ’00 began his career at Raleigh City Hall when he was 15 years old. Today, Branch is the new city council member representing District C.

“I remember those summers vividly,” said Branch. “While I was filing privilege licenses for businesses in Raleigh and delivering mail throughout the building, I had a chance to interact daily with those in leadership and learn how city hall functions.”

Branch was elected to the Raleigh City Council on Oct. 9, and sworn in on Nov. 30. As one of the newest members of the Raleigh City Council, Branch seeks to use his knowledge and passion for District C in a way that ensures economic inclusiveness, civic communication, and transit development.

"City council is about connecting the dots between the needs of the community with the available services,” said Branch. “I’m excited about working to improve the transit system in Raleigh to allow citizens to go to their desired jobs in order to afford to live in the community they desire.”

Branch has served his native city in numerous ways since graduating and returning home from North Carolina A&T State University with a degree in electrical engineering. In addition to his position as a network technology manager for AT&T, Branch serves on the board of WakeUP Wake County, is the chairman for the Marrkens Development Group, and for the past four years has served as the Regional Leadership Chair for a summer leadership institute hosting high school students from seven states.

Branch credits his time at N.C. A&T for helping mold him into the leader he has become. During Branch’s time as a student, he was a leader in the Raleigh Aggie Club, participated in the Aggie Live Wires pep squad, and was the Freshman Committee President of the National Society of Black Engineers.

“As a member of different organizations I developed a better understanding of service and what it means to work as a team,” said Branch. “These positions developed my leadership and public speaking and helped grow my desire to improve the lives of others.”

During his junior year, Branch also served as director of voter registration/education in the Student Government Association. “Working with the students to show why voting is important and the local impact voting can have aided me in getting to where I am now,” Branch said.

Branch continues to return to Greensboro to support Aggie athletics and the College of Engineering. In addition to being a member of the Raleigh-Wake Alumni Chapter, Branch is a member of the Aggie Athletic Foundation and season ticket holder for football and basketball. “Giving back to A&T can be done on many levels,” said Branch. “As Aggies we have many ways to give back to the university and community that has given us so much.”

Branch also sees his life-long connection to Raleigh as part of the opportunity he has to serve as both a visionary leader and a role model for his city. “I pray young kids in my community see that someone from their same streets and neighborhoods can serve, lead and have a positive impact on the community.”
